If I had to choose one accessory that I love the most, it would have to be the scarf.

I think it had a lot to do with my being so tall when I was a little kid. Either nothing fit, or if it did, it wouldn’t fit for long, because I just kept growing! However, my scarves ALWAYS fit, so I could count on them to give me a pop of color. It was certainly more interesting than the never ending black pants and white tops!

Scarves are great because they are hands down the most versatile piece you can have in your wardrobe. I mean, what else is there that you can wear as an accessory and an article of clothing? Not only can it grace your neck, but you can put it in your hair, or on your wrist as a bracelet. It can be a decoration for your purse. I can be a belt. It can be a covering for your head.

True, scarves do also serve a functional purpose--they keep your neck warm in the winter. They can serve a religious purpose or protect from sun exposure.

I love that if I change my scarf, it can look like I’m wearing a completely different outfit. Plus, I love all the textures and fabrics that scarves come in. Scarves can be made of any type of material: silk, cotton, fur, linen, synthetic fibers, and combinations thereof.

A scarf can be anything and everything in your wardrobe, and you are limited only by your imagination!

So are you ready to get started? I am so excited that I am going to be giving you a lot of excellent ideas about how to wear a scarf with your outfits this fall and winter. And I’m including some of the latest, most awesome scarves that I’ve come across so far around the internet, so you can get started building your scarf wardrobe or adding to outfits you already have!

How To Wear a Skinny Scarf

I love the skinny scarf, but it can be a little tricky to style because of the dimensions.

The easiest way to wear a skinny scarf is just to toss it around your neck like a necklace. You can use it as a headband instead of using a rubber band as a sweet way to keep your hair out of your face. You could also use it as a bracelet, which is cool, but of course tricky to tie on your own! You can always wear a skinny scarf as a belt, which is a chic alternative to the standard leather.

I suggest styling your long skinny scarf with a simple jeans and t-shirt combo. If you want to amp up this unconventional scarf style, do an out-on-the-town rocker chic style with some leather pants and pumps.

In this video, I'll show you the simple way that you can tie your own long, skinny scarf.

How I wore my long skinny scarf this week.

I shopped my wardrobe for this look this week. I wore some black button down J Brand jeans with Stuart Weitzman snakeskin booties, and asymmetrical top. Accessories are a simple black clutch, Gucci sunnies and my long skinny scarf.

Skinny scarves with embellishments or textures, like the fur scarf in the next video, are fun! Especially when they have fun dye jobs like this one does! But sometimes, they are more challenging to tie, because they’ll produce a bulky, awkward knot if you’re not careful.

Here I’ll demonstrate a nice, more flat knot that will keep your skinny scarf in place, and you can enjoy the coziness of the fur. In this case, I usually keep my outfit simple! Maybe even a coordinating monotone from head to toe. It’s an attention getting scarf and conversation piece, so I don’t want other prints fighting for attention!

It was love at first site when I saw this little skinny scarf. Maybe because something so small and dainty had the print of a dangerous snake! It’s such a surprising little piece of artwork that I could wear as a neck scarf! Let me show you a few ways you rock your small skinny scarf below.

Here’s how I wore my skinny scarf this week. I chose to wear the small skinny scarf using the knot I demonstrated above, with my A.L.C. Elaine Belted Minidress. I liked this wearing this scarf with this outfit because it’s small enough that it mimics a necklace.

I wouldn’t normally even wear a necklace with a dress like this one, due to the high crew collar, but I also wanted to keep other jewelry simple (studs, silver bracelet), so I thought the scarf would add a nice touch and make it less boring.

I tied this small skinny scarf in a simple knot and paired it with a black A.L.C. dress.

Yes! It can be challenging not to choke yourself by accidentally pulling the knots too tight, so be careful! LOL.

One more skinny scarf video. This one is menswear inspired! After you learn how to knot your scarf in this way, you’ll be able to proudly say that you can tie a tie! This is a simple knot, but with a small scarf like a Twilly, length is limited, so simplicity is key.

I particularly love the smart look I get with this method of tying. I had to throw on my nerd glasses! LOL!

How To Wear a Rectangle Scarf

When I think of a nice, cozy warm scarf, a plaid rectangle shaped scarf comes to mind first. Rectangle scarves are the work horses of the scarf world.

There are some cute ways that you can tie your rectangle scarf, though! A rectangular shaped scarf can also be used well as the stand-in for a belt.

Here’s a variation on the same knot with the same scarf. This type of knot works really well with blends of fibers. It’s also a really cool way to show off your scarf if it’s an ombre or color block.

Anyway, next I’ll move on to a type of scarf near and dear to my heart: the Maxi Twilly. You can treat it basically like a rectangular scarf.

Do we have any Maxi Twilly lovers out here?

If you don’t know what a Maxi Twilly is, it is a style of scarf made by Hermes that is basically a huge Twilly. It’s like the Twilly is the Baby Bear scarf and the Maxi Twilly is the Mama Bear scarf. 🐻

The Maxi Twilly can be used in a variety of ways. It can easily make a great scarf for your head. One of my favorite ways is to wear it as a belt, much like an Obi.

I’ve been known to wear them with a jumpsuit, just to break up the color (and apparently, I like it to be even more challenging to go to the restroom!). It helps me to look less obviously tall, depending on who I’m hanging out with!

Here is another of my favorite ways to tie the Maxi Twilly. It works equally well with a turtleneck, which I will show you. Who says you can’t add neckwear just because you’re wearing a turtleneck!

Some Final Thoughts on How to Tie a Scarf

There are an infinite number of ways that you can wear a scarf to make some awesome outfits. I love that there are so many ways to tie and knot my scarves to either show off the scarf itself, or to accentuate the outfit that I’m wearing with the scarf.

These are just a few of my favorite simple ways to tie a scarf. I wish I could show you all of them, but that would take ALL. DAY. LOL.

Do you love scarf weather? What’s your favorite scarf?
