If you know your measurements, you can then fill them into this handy calculator, because, you know. Insert eye roll. Math. What is my body shape?

This particular body shape is also called the athletic body shape, banana body shape, straight body shape, or ruler body shape. I’ll probably use them interchangeably throughout the post. Because the names are awesome, that’s why!

Before we get started discussing the ruler body shape (lol, see?), I want to remind you that this post is part of a series and I will be discussing all the major body shapes, so never fear, my dear!  I want you to find the right clothes for your body type! The other posts in this series so far are the inverted triangle body shape and pear body shape. Still to come are the apple body shape and the hourglass body shape.  Because everybody could use a few tips, right? So make sure you’re subscribed. You don’t want to miss anything!

If you are an inverted triangle body shape, see this article. If you are a pear body shape, see this article.

Celebrities with a rectangle body shape

Alright, ladies.  Some of your favorite celebrities have a rectangle body shape!  This includes, to name a few:

  • Natalie Portman

  • Cameron Diaz

  • Gwyneth Paltrow

  • Nicole Kidman

  • Gwen Stefani

  • Queen Latifah

  • Anne Hathaway

They look stunning when they step out on the red carpet, right? That’s because they (besides having a team of people working to make them look great) are wearing the best dresses for their straight body type!  So read on to get tips on making your look red carpet worthy consistently.

General rules for dressing the rectangle body shape

The main issue with this body type is that the similarity between the bust, waist and hip measurements can sometimes make this look like a more boyish body type, especially for women who are slimmer or below the average height.  So the theme will need to be to make your hips appear to be wider AT THE SAME TIME as making your shoulders appear wider. Then you will have to make your waist appear to be smaller and/or more defined. Any dresses for the straight body type are going to need to have details at the top as well as the skirt portion.

If you wear something to make your shoulders look wider without paying attention to the bottom, you end up looking unbalanced, like an inverted triangle.  Or if you wear a full skirt on the bottom and ignore what top you’re wearing, you will visually look like a pear. Yes. They’re beautiful body shapes, too. But we’re going for symmetry.

There are small differences in things like the neckline or hems, because fitting clothes for your body type not only depends on the underlying shape, but on the distribution of your weight and your height. So I’ll go through each height: short, average and tall; as well as some general weight categories: slim, medium, full and plus.  With the right clothes for your body shape, you can transform your rectangle shape into an hourglass visually.

Dressing the Short (up to 5’2”) Rectangle Figure

Appearing to be more boyish is a challenge, especially for women who are shorter and have a rectangle body shape.  So the key is to give the appearance of wider shoulders and wider hips and making sure to scale any accessories to your size.  You may want to look a little taller, which you will also be able to do with the right attire. Remember that wearing one color from top to bottom has a lengthening effect overall.

Dressing the Short Petite Rectangle

Although a straight body shape can appear boyish, with attention to detail, it is possible to add the appearance of curves. By simultaneously making the shoulders appear wider and giving the hips more visual weight, fitting clothes to your body type will result in a more balanced figure. The waist will as a result look smaller compared to both the shoulders and hips, producing the goal hourglass body shape.
