Other names for this body type are reverse triangle, top heavy or high balance.  The place where the eye settles is going to be where the broadest point is, which will be your shoulders.  The goal is to balance your frame and avoid making you look top heavy or shorter, especially if you are petite. In order to do this, it is necessary to de-emphasize your shoulders and place more give a little more “oomph” to your bottom half.

What should I wear if I have an inverted triangle body shape?

When shopping, you should choose clothes for the inverted triangle body shape that bring the focus back to your center, away from your shoulders, and add the illusion of weight at your hips. Both of these elements help to balance you visually and to make you look more like an hourglass shape.

When shopping for dresses, jackets and coats for the inverted triangle body shape, it’s important to choose a size that fits your shoulders and bust first. Depending on your height and weight, there will be some variation in the cuts of garments, and different accessories that may suit you more or less, but the idea is the same.

Need some easy tips for finding a dress online ? You might find this post useful!

The best dresses for the inverted triangle body shape have a V-neck, U-neck, sweetheart neckline or halter.  Showing a little skin in the shape of a triangle does exactly what you need the dresses to do--draw the eye back to the center.  Wrap dresses, especially those made of jerseys, help accentuate your hips by giving you more volume there, which makes you as symmetrical as possible.

If you are wearing separates, a dark top paired with light color bottoms will downplay your top half and play up your bottom half, which will also balance out your body and make you look symmetrical.  If you wear the same color from head to toe, this will make you look taller

As for your accessories, necklaces that are thin and draping help pull the eye away from your shoulders.  Purses that have straps long enough so that the purse itself hits at your hip also do well to balance your shoulders. A small clutch is also a great option--just remember to carry purses that are proportional to your size!

A-line, circle, gored and wrap skirts are perfect for your inverted triangle body type because the flare makes it look like you have fuller hips.  In order to look taller, your skirts should be knee length or shorter (show some leg, woman!). You are also able to wear skirts in heavier fabrics, which also add fullness to your hips. Front or side pockets are fantastic at drawing attention to your hips.

With jeans, any distressing, bleaching or fading that’s placed at or near the hips makes you look a little curvier and draws the attention there. Straight leg jeans make this body shape look taller. Pockets can actually give the illusion of a little extra weight at the hips, which will balance out your top half and give you more of an hourglass look as well.

More tips for dressing the short inverted triangle body type (up to about 5’2”)

If you are a short and petite inverted triangle body shape

    • When you wear tops with straps, it’s best if the straps fall in the middle of  your shoulders. If they’re too far out, it just makes the width of your shoulders more obvious.

    • You look great in low-rise jeans, and you can wear belts at your hips, which will add more curve.

If you are a short medium build inverted triangle body shape

    • Make sure the width of the straps of your top looks proportional to your body.

    • You can also enjoy tunic tops, tailored tops, really anything that falls at the hip.

    • Three-quarter-length sleeves are also great for making your top part smaller, just make sure the sleeve hits at the thinnest part of your arm to look the best!

    • You also look fantastic in tulip skirts or dresses with horizontal ruching.

    • Try jackets that are short and peplum.

    • Feel free to wear bold bangles and cuffs, and consider chandelier earrings to create more vertical lines at your neck.

If you are a short and full build inverted triangle body shape

    • Wider straps are better in tops so that you can balance out your shoulder width.  With an inverted triangle body, tiny spaghetti straps just make your shoulders look bigger!

    • You can rock dark jeans like a boss! These probably look the best on you, as does a straight leg.

    • Peplum or princess cut jackets and blazers look amazing!

    • Three-quarter-length sleeves are also great for you.  They look best when the hem hits right at the thinnest part of your arms.

    • Cool pendant necklaces are good for you, and also brings the eye to the center.

    • If you choose, you could also wear wonderful cuffs and bangles because they always look great on you as an accessory.

If you are a short plus size inverted triangle body shape

    • While you should also choose tops that have U-necks or sweetheart necks, you may want to go with a top with a more shallow V-neck.  Square necks also look good!

    • Fabric choice is especially important in dresses.  Go for A-line dresses in fabrics like matte jersey, polyester/spandex blends, maybe georgette.  Avoid anything that is too transparent, thin or clingy.

    • The same goes for skirts. Find skirts in fabrics like a heavier cotton, or poplin.  Skirts that have fabulous details like ribbons or beading at the waist helps give you more of a curvy hourglass shape.

    • Choose peplum coats and blazers, because they look great on your inverted triangle body. Blazers with 1-button closures (called low-stance) give a slimming effect.

    • Pendant necklaces are always a good choice.

    • Plus, if you wear a belt or something with a sash, placement at the high hip will add volume and balance out the width of your shoulders.

    • Remember to get pumps that are in proportion to your frame.  And go as wild as you want, with colors and styles, to draw more attention to your legs or ankles.
